Spirit of Detroit

Detroit embodies the phrase inscribed on the Spirit of Detroit statue, Speramus Meliora, Resurget Cineribus. “We hope for better things, it will arise from the ashes” which was a quote from the priest Gabriel Richard after the Great Fire of 1805 in the city. Throughout our history, we as a city have both figuratively and physically persevered through all challenges that we’ve experienced.

Architecture

Detroit’s architecture is like none other. Our rich architectural history started in the late 1800s with structures that have stood the test of time and adversity. With architects like Daniel Burnham and Albert Khan, we have structures that still stand and are a part of the fabric of our history. Tours of iconic buildings such as the Fisher Building and the Guardian Building are available, as well as tours of our great city as a whole.

History

Detroit was founded in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac as a trading post with the Canadians. The word Detroit in French means the strait, which is a body of water that connects two larger bodies of water. The city burned to the ground in 1805 and Augustus Woodward was commissioned to create a street plan modeled after Washington D.C.
